ETERNAL LIFE
Eternal life is a central theme in the Bible, and refers to the idea of a never-ending existence that is characterized by spiritual, physical, and emotional wholeness and perfect communion with God. Here are some brief biblical notes on eternal life:
- It is a gift from God: The Bible teaches that eternal life is a gift from God that is offered to us through faith in Jesus Christ. As John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
- It is a quality of life, not just a quantity: Eternal life is not just about living forever, but about experiencing abundant and fulfilling life in relationship with God. Jesus said in John 10:10, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
- It is a present reality and a future hope: While eternal life is often associated with life after death, the Bible teaches that it is also a present reality for believers. As Jesus said in John 5:24, "Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life."
- It is based on faith, not works: The Bible teaches that eternal life is a gift of God's grace that is received through faith in Jesus Christ, not by our own works or efforts. As Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast."
- It is a promise of hope and assurance: The promise of eternal life gives believers hope and assurance in the face of trials, suffering, and death. As 1 John 5:13 says, "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."
